Dropbox is a new online storage service/application which looks like it has loads of potential. Currently in beta testing phase it looks very promising! Form the early features of this innovative application I can really see it becoming a big product in the years to come, something worth looking out for. How and what does it do… It basically works by syncing local files to a web repository, which allows multiple users and multiple access rights. It integrates into the windows shell, and with a simple right click here and an left click there all of the files in a predetermined folder is ready to be kept in sync with a web repository which can be accessed later to retrieve the files or by someone else as soon as the changes happen, some of you might be thinking, this will never work in South Africa, what, with all our bandwidth problems… Well good news is the developers have put a very strong emphases on performance. Only the changes are transmitted not the entire file. Every time you make a change only the changed bytes are transmitted this is actually an old tactic to speed up file transfers but this was only really used on text files, Dropbox can transmit byte level changes on binary files, like the one demonstration video showed you can edit a picture file and only the part which changed will be transmitted. Pretty neat for people form the tip of Africa!
Mark my words this will be big, especially coming form MIT graduates. For more info visit getdropbox.
