It has been yet another Phuza Thursday, for me, yesterday was my birthday, and i decided to grab a few drinks with some friends, well as it always happens a few turned into a couple a couple turned into a lot, and before I knew it it was 2am, and I needed to get ready for work in about three and a half hours!
If you don’t know by now, Phuza (pronounced Pooh-za) Thursday, is a new phenomena hitting South Africa, it basically is when you suddenly get the uncontrollable urge to drink on a Thursday night, despite knowing all to well that you have to go to work on Friday! Kind of extending your weekend. It is the thing in Gauteng at the moment and people from all over Jozi and Pretoria are getting hammered on Thursdays! Phuza means to drink in Zulu.
From Phuza Thursday a new set of slang has been spawned terms like,
- Phuza Face, the symptoms of which are: Red eyes, dull and overall pale look, bags under the eyes.
- Phuzagraine like a migraine but as a result of phuzaing last night.
- Phuza-Thursday-Safari, a pub crawling expedition, which departs every Thursday at 17:15 from the pub or any other place to get the throat wet for that matter, located closest to your place of work, so that it is conveniently situated as to maximize Phuza pleasure. Then the safari begins; start at one place and drink a few there and move along to the next, or if there are no other places, start with one cocktail moving along until you have sampled the entire menu, then try to guess the name of the one you had 3rd, Phuza Fun! An added bonus of course is, that you will still be dressed in you work attire, and your work is situated close by, you can just skip going home altogether and go directly to work, so that you can maximize Phuza Thursday! I mean like WOW! Obviously care should be taken as to ensure that you have a few reserve written warnings, you know those golden get out of jail free cards, so that if you are still out of it when arriving at work that your ass doesn’t get fired before the first meeting at 13:00.
So next Thursday you have no excuse PHUZA THURSDAY is coming, yet again in only 7 hola 7 that is, days, eish yoh!
