Components expected today.

H@ck1ng, Hardware, Home Automation, PSP No Comments »

I will be getting the first shipment of components today. So Hopefully I will be able to start on some of my projects by this weekend. First will be the home automation system, them the psp keyboard. But before all that i will be building a development and programming board for the micro-controllers I ordered, because the micros will be the core of most of my future projects.

More input?!

I haven’t even started the development of my PS/2 -> IR -> PSP Interface, and I have a revision to the idea, well maybe an addition, or even a supplicant. USB keyboard - > Psp via serial or Ir. Ok just a quick post…

eeePC

Damn, how I desire this device! eeePC

This has to be the gadget of the year. Fully featured small notebook. The ultimate mobile device, well for its price anyway!

I am going to Hong Kong in September, I will be buying one, but I don’t think I will be able to last that long.

So I am going to see if I can order one on the web! First thing I will do is get more Ram, by the look of things it uses 200Pin so-dimm modules, so I will get at least 1gig of memory.

Psp Ir keybord, project with a twist.

So I haven’t been posting anything about the PSP in awhile, the favorite of all my gadgets! So the best way to make it right is to start a project. I am in the process of designing an Ir interface for the psp, I am still in the planning phase but this is what I had in mind:

  • A small pic based device
  • With an Ir interface, obviously
  • A PS/2 Keyboard interface

I think you get the idea? ;)

If you are a bit slow, hehe, I had some trouble trying to get a decent compatible IR keyboard, so I started to think of an universal interface.
Picture this you have a psp you want to use nice homebrew apps like irc ssh vnc, and the like, but you don’t like trying to type with an OSK (on screen keyboard), you’ve heard of the fantastic libraries that can enable you to use a pda’s IR keyboard you think GREAT!! But wait Jim you don’t have one. But you have a normal PS/2 keyboard?

Ok enough with the sarcasm, watch this space for more…

Gadget geek paradise!

This is my next big project. I want to put together a home automation system, which will enable me to control certain functions of my house, both automatically and via a remote interface, probably web based.

Ubuntu, sound woes…

Hardware, Ubuntu No Comments »

In a previous post I mentioned that I setup a new Ubuntu box based on a Nforce 2 mother board. Well everything works nicely except for the sound, I only get 2 channels. :( I tweaked the alsconfig and it now produces the correct output from all 6 speakers when I run…

Ubuntu, Yebo…

Hardware, Home Automation, Ubuntu 2 Comments »

Well I have been a Fan of Ubuntu for some years now and I have been running it on and of for a while now. I still have to use windows, because I am a C# developer by day and for the libs we use and the development we do @ work Mono won’t cut it, so my Notebook is windows only. I used a virtual machine and emulated Ubuntu on it with great success in the past and before I sold my Desktop, it had Ubuntu 6X running very nicely. A week or so ago I got some old PC gear from my uncle, I decided this would be it, I would install Ubuntu 7.10 and experience the joys of open source once again! (Well actually open source powers my home network, with a IPCOP box for ADSL access and firewalling, and a Ubuntu server ed box, for hosting my home’s homepage. ;) I owe allot to Open source, and Mark. )

Quantum leap…

Hardware No Comments »

Quantum computing is leading to a very heated debate, this after D-Wave systems inc. announced that they have the first commercial quantum computer. Scientists however believe it to be some time before the world will have true quantum computing.

Quantum computing, from what I understand, basically is computing based on the principles of quantum physics, in this paradigm qubits stored in a computer can be in both a “0″ and a “1″ state at the same time, this compared to normal paradigm of digital bits, where a bit can only be a “0″ or a “1″ at one time, this property is said to unlock large computational power.

We will have to wait and see, D-Wave is still to submit their findings for peer review, and their current 16qubit proof of concept system is hardly a match for the desktop computers we all are running today.

GEEE, G80

Hardware No Comments »

The G80 GPU from NVidia is the most advanced microprocessor. The DX10 range from NVidia packs a very large punch! It even makes the PS3 look primitive.

The Inquirer.net has a nice quote on the G80;

“And the G80 graphics chip is the most advanced piece in the microprocessing industry. Its complexity makes the Athlon 64, Core 2 or even Sony’s Cell look like little kids in a kindergarten. µ”
