The game of Life.

The Game of Life by John Conway, has fasinated me for sometime, I recently discovered a website with short titbits about it all and some java applets to illustrate how it all works.

I played around with it and soon I was hooked I “designed” my own little “glider” and I found that the emergent behaviour was quite nice. I call it Order out of Chaos, because it starts out as what seams to be a random placement of cubes and turns into a “walker” and a static cube, quite nice for my first “LifeHack” attempt.

HTPC Build Part 4

Hardware, Software, Ubuntu No Comments »

I am seriously getting frustrated, with this IR Transmitter, this is a vital part of my build and it is getting me under! I have gotten the PVR150′s IR Blaster to work, well as mentioned it blinks and it does appear to transmit when commanded to, but my DSTV decoder is not working!! I tried loads of scripts and still nothing, I used mark’s send_power_new, and it ran for about 10mins, blinking away as it should but still nothing, no response from the decoder…

HTPC Build Part 3

Adventures, Hardware, Home Automation No Comments »

Yet another late night for me, I have most of the software sorted out now, and my setup is running semi-usable. I got the TV guide working and integrated, it works great, I can see what is showing when with synopsis and some other meta-data and I can even schedule recordings from a web interface and afterwords download or stream it, I don’t have the streaming working yet, but the functionality is there. My next mission which took up most of last night was, trying to get the IR Blaster, aka transmitter working.

Wow, what a weekend, I went to watch The Dark Knight on iMax and it was great, watch the rugby had a few drinks, and continued with my HTPC build. Headaches galore from hangovers and head-bashing caused by struggling into the wee hours of the night! But I have made some progress.

What is a Home theatre PC? Ill let the Wikipedia explain:

A home theatre PC (HTPC) or media PC is a convergence device that combines the functions of a personal computer and a digital video recorder. I have been using google as my search engine of choice for so long, I can’t even remember the url’s of any other search engines… But like all things in live change is good, I change my desktop background at least two times a month, I change my cell phone’s ring tone about once a month, I even change girl friends every now and again :p So why have I constantly been using google for the last 8 odd years? The sort answer, there was not anything worth considering. I used the word ‘was’ for a reason, enter cuil.

MCP42050 Digital Potentiometer.

Hardware Hacking, Home Automation No Comments »

I am busy working on a project where I need to control a device via a computer, the interface is not at all complicated, I need to basically control 2 potentiometers, to tweak the function of the device. Potentiometers are used in many products, for such things as volume or frequency, controls or any other analogue input. A potentiometer or variable resistor, can change its resistance according to the position of the turning knob.
